Child Development Department

Through a dynamic partnership with families, we seek to provide high quality childcare and support services early in the lives of children in the belief that education and health are lifelong gifts that empower people to improve conditions for their families and communities.

Wu Yee's Child Development Centers provide children with a nurturing and safe environment where they are encouraged to express themselves and learn through exploration at their own pace. Teachers provide the children with challenging activities and a culturally diverse curriculum emphasizing acceptance and tolerance. Teachers guide children in their learning by providing opportunities for socialization and problem solving as well as exploration and experimentation. In our nationally recognized intergenerational program at Generations, children develop relationships with the elders from On Lok providing them with a unique learning experience.

The Child Development Program provides full-day, year-round services to children ages 0-5 and pregnant women through Early Head Start, Head Start, and state subsidized child care and child development programs. These programs cater to low-income families, including families with children with disabilities. We also offer private preschool slots to higher-income families with children between the ages of 3 and 5. Currently, our centers are located in the Tenderloin, Chinatown, and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods of San Francisco. Our Child Development Program reflects the cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity of our communities.

The Child Development Program provides comprehensive services, integrating aspects of parent involvement, education, health, mental health, nutrition, and social services. Parents are involved in all aspects of the program and services are enriched by partnerships with other community agencies. Children are allowed to learn through exploration, with opportunities to engage in activities and explore toys that are developmentally-appropriate. Parents and staff develop learning plans to address individual children's developmental goals.

• Our Head Start Home-based Program provides comprehensive Head Start services through weekly home visits, working with child's parents, pregnant woman and family. The Home-Based Program Specialist and parent work together to promote the child's healthy growth and development. Enrolled families participate in group socialization activities twice a month. The Home-Based program serves pregnant women and children up to the age of three.

• Our Family Child Care Program provides comprehensive child development and family support services to enrolled families in licensed family child care homes. The Early Head Start Family Child Care Network includes licensed family child care providers throughout San Francisco contracted to provide child care services in their homes. An Early Head Start Family Child Development Specialist works closely with families, serving as a support and resource.

• Our Center-based program options are full-day, full-year. Income-eligible families receive low or no-cost services. Private slots are available in the Preschool centers.
